Life Story for Hugo Black Griggs

Mr. Hugo Black Griggs, age 89, a resident of Dothan, died Monday August 15, 2016 in Cartersville, Georgia after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday August 20, 2016 at the Heritage Baptist Church with Reverend’s Van Clack, Coley Holloway and Brent McNeal officiating. Burial will follow in the Dothan City Cemetery with Kendall Glover directing.

The family will be receiving friends from 12:45 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. Saturday at Heritage Baptist Church prior to services. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Homebound Ministry at Heritage Baptist Church, 1951 Westgate Pkwy., Dothan, AL. 36303.

Mr. Griggs was born on September 8, 1926 in Dothan the son of James Cicero Griggs and Lillie L. Kilgore Griggs. He was a 1944 Dothan High Graduate and a 1951 graduate of University of Alabama with a Degree in Business Administration. Mr. Griggs was the owner of Griggs Floor Covering where he had worked since 1944. He was a Charter member of Heritage Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon, Director of Adult Sunday School Department, Chairman of night service ushers and pastoral care minister and trustee. Mr. Griggs was a board member for 20 years at The Haven and served as President for two years. Mr. Griggs had served as the past clerk and moderator for the Columbia Baptist Association. He was a WWII Army veteran and was a retired officer with the Army Reserve and 20 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Louise Griggs, brother, Rev. William Griggs.

Survivors include: 2 sons, Michael Griggs (Sally), Dothan; Stewart Griggs (Nanci), Cartersville, GA.; 2 daughters, Margaret Green (Bill), Dothan; Beth McNeal (Bobby), Waco, Tx.; 3 sisters, Evelyn Wicker, Keystone Heights, FL.; Sara Elliot, Madrid; Shirley Dismukes, Opelika; 11 Grandchildren; 13 Great-Grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

Active pallbearers will be: Hunter Green, Holden Green, Ben McNeal, Brent McNeal, Braden McNeal, Dax Griggs, Philip Justiss, Scott McLelland, Chase McLelland and Ben Morehead.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Mr. Griggs Sunday School Class and the Donut Gang from Loyless.

Glover Funeral Home of Dothan has been entrusted with the arrangements.
