Life Story for Karen Lies McCarroll

Karen Lies McCarroll, a resident of Dothan, died Friday, August 28, 2015, at her home surrounded by her family. She was 65.

Mrs. McCarroll was born at Duke University Hospital, Durham, North Carolina, on November 1, 1949. She moved to Dothan at an early age and was a 1967 graduate of Dothan High School. She graduated from the University of Alabama in 1971 and was president of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She was a lifelong fan of the University. She moved to Atlanta where she met her husband, Steve, and worked in the International Department of C & S National Bank. In 1981, they moved to Dothan. Mrs. McCarroll was a teacher at Houston Academy for 22 years, the last 13 as an algebra teacher. She served on the Board of the Dothan Girls Club and served as President of the Dothan Service League. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Dothan, where she served on numerous committees over the years.

Mrs. McCarroll was predeceased by her mother, Virginia Winters Lies. Surviving relatives include her husband of 42 years, Steve; daughters Ginny (Jim) Bakken and Susan (Taylor) Garrett, grandson Jack Bakken and granddaughter Kate Bakken, all of Birmingham; father, Dr. William Lies of Dothan; brothers Bill Lies (Jane) of Pensacola, Steve Lies (Kathy) of Goldsboro, N.C., Michael Michel (Judy) of Birmingham; sisters, Susan Ethridge of Dothan, Elanor Michel (Stan Scott) of Dothan; brother-in-law Rick McCarroll (Lee) Asheville, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; and her dog, Emma.

The family would like to thank Dr. Scott McAllister and his staff (Ellen, Jennifer, Lori, Samantha, Lisa, Keith, Betsy, Darby, Jessie, and Sandy), Dr. Steve Fernandez, Dr. Hugh Holloway and Dr. Nick Voss for their friendship and care, and Lynda Campbell from Gentiva Hospice.

A private family service will be held at First United Methodist Church, Monday, August 31, in Walton Garden with Dr. James B. Sanders, III officiating. A reception for family and friends will be held from 3-5 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the In Christ’s Name fund at First United Methodist Church, 1380 West Main Street, Dothan, Alabama, 36301, or a charity of your choice.
